What is Ellilta Products?

WHAT IS ELLILTA PRODUCTS?

Established in February 2012, Ellilta Products (EP) is the retail and income-generating branch of Ellilta Women at Risk (EWAR). EP is a local, Ethiopian, non-governmental organization that accomplishes two things: provides women employment opportunities after leaving a life on the streets and generates income for the EWAR program through the production and sales of scarves and jewelry. Many of the women employed at EP are women who have completed the EWAR rehabilitation program, and 100% of the profit made from the sales of their artisanal goods goes towards their salaries and back into the EWAR rehabilitation program. These women come to work each day knowing that their profit is helping more and more women off the streets. EP is more than just a business, it is a loving, supportive community as well as a source of meaningful employment for women in Ethiopia.

WHERE IS ELLILTA PRODUCTS LOCATED?

Currently Ellilta Products has their workshop located inside the EWAR headquarters in the city of Addis Ababa. The workshop includes looms to hand weave scarves, and workstations for jewelry-making and leatherwork. They also have a small retail store where they sell many of their scarves, jewelry and leather goods to local buyers. The EP workshop and retail store is open Monday to Saturday, from 8:00AM to 5:00PM.

WHAT DOES ELLILTA PRODUCTS MAKE?

EP mainly produces 100% cotton, hand-woven scarves and blankets as well as hand-crafted jewelry such as necklaces, bracelets and earrings. EP is also able to produce leather goods such as purses and wallets. While EP has mainly focused on these products, they have the potential and resources to produce an array of goods if requested.

WHERE DOES ELLILTA PRODUCTS GET THEIR SUPPLIES?

EP purchases most of their supplies from local markets and suppliers in Ethiopia. For their scarves, EP purchases raw cotton and wool and does all the spinning and dyeing of the thread/yarn themselves at their workshop. EP can purchase dye from local markets, however they also have dye shipped to them from their global partners in order to fulfill custom color orders. Most of EP jewelry is made with beautiful beads that were crafted from recycled bullet casings, which EP purchases from a local supplier. Some EP jewelry is also made with wood, stones and leather which is also supplied locally.

WHERE ARE ELLILTA PRODUCTS GOODS SOLD?

Though EP does sell their handmade goods in their own shop at EWAR headquarters in Addis Ababa, EP mainly partners with global organizations that purchase goods in bulk to market and sell in their own cities. This strategy not only allows EP to sell their products on a larger scale, but also allows the opportunity to spread the story of EWAR and of all the women who have left prostitution for a safer and more fulfilling life.
